MOUTHGUARDS
Mouthguards are a device worn over your teeth that protects them from injury. They are an important piece of athletic equipment for anyone participating in a sport that involves falls, body contact or flying equipment. This includes football, rugby, cricket, basketball, hockey, skateboarding, gymnastics, martial arts, mountain biking or any activity that might result in an injury to the mouth
Mouth guards should ideally be replaced after each season because they can wear down over time, making them less effective. Replacement is especially important for adolescents because their mouths continue to grow and teeth continue to develop into adulthood.
A good protective mouthguard must...
- be comfortable yet tight-fitting
- allow normal breathing and swallowing
- allow normal speech
- not cause gagging
- be odourless and tasteless
- be thick enough (4 mm) to provide protection against impact.
ADA mandatory mouthguard policy
If you're a sporting club wanting to implement a mouthguard policy, download the ADA mandatory mouthguard policy endorsed by both the ADA and Sports Medicine Australia (SMA).
FACT - Did you know if you get a knock in the teeth and you suspect tooth damage or loss you should leave the mouthguard in your mouth until you are able to see a dentist or get medical advice
